When people talk about Dendrobium Orchids varieties, they usually divide them into two groups based on their canes: soft cane Dendrobiums and hard cane Dendrobiums. But did you know that this classification system is not accurate? Another popular way of categorizing them is based on the most well-known orchids, Nobile and Phalaenopsis. However, that isn’t wholly correct either. In reality, over 1,800 species of Dendrobium orchids are divided into six distinct groups based on their growth habits and flower characteristics.
The first group is the Dendrobium Phalaenopsis, the most common group of Dendrobium orchids in cultivation. These orchids have large, round flowers resembling the phalaenopsis orchid. The second group is the Dendrobium Spatula, which has small, star-shaped flowers and grows compactly and uprightly. The third group is the Dendrobium Latouria, which has large, showy, highly fragrant flowers. The fourth group is the Dendrobium Formosae, which has small, delicate flowers that grow in clusters. The fifth group is the Dendrobium Callista, which has large, bold blooms in various colors. Finally, there is the Dendrobium group, which includes all other species that do not fit into the other five groups.
Each group of Dendrobium orchids has unique characteristics and requirements for growth, making them an exciting and rewarding group of plants to grow. In this article, we will explore each group in more detail and discuss some of the most popular and compelling species within each group.

Dendrobium formosae
Dendrobium formosae is a species of Dendrobium Orchids varieties that is native to Taiwan. This beautiful plant has cylindrical, elongated stems reaching 50cm in length. The stems are greenish-yellow and have small, scaly leaves that grow in a spiral pattern along the stem. When the plant blooms, it produces clusters of small, white, or yellow flowers with a delicate, sweet fragrance.
Dendrobium formosae is a popular ornamental plant cultivated in many parts of the world. It is easy to grow and care for, and it can thrive in a variety of conditions. The plant prefers bright, indirect light and a well-draining growing medium. It should be watered regularly during the growing season, but it should be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. The plant should be given a rest period in the winter with reduced watering and cooler temperatures.
In traditional Chinese medicine, Dendrobium formosae is believed to have various health benefits. It is often used to treat coughs, fever, and other respiratory ailments. The plant contains compounds that have been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dendrobium callista is a species of Dendrobium Orchids varieties native to the Philippines. It is known for its beautiful and fragrant flowers, usually white or pale pink. The flowers have a distinct lip and a long spur, which are common characteristics of the Dendrobium genus.
This orchid species is epiphytic, which grows on trees or other plants without harming them. It prefers to grow in high-humidity environments and requires regular watering and fertilization to thrive. In the wild, it can be found in forests, growing on the trunks and branches of trees.
Dendrobium callista is not commonly cultivated, but it is a sought-after species among orchid enthusiasts due to its striking beauty and unique characteristics. It is also believed to have medicinal properties and is used in traditional medicine in some parts of the world.
The conservation status of Dendrobium callista is currently unknown. Still, like many orchid species, it is threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and illegal harvesting for trade. Conservation efforts are needed to protect this species and ensure its survival in the wild.
Some Dendrobium callista species include:

Dendrobium (Dendrobium)
Dendrobiums are a popular type of orchid species, with the most well-known being the Dendrobium Nobile due to its distinctive purple petals and white center. There are two types of Dendrobiums: the pendulous and the erect. In the pendulous group, the flowers hang from the base and drape over the pot, similar to the Nobile orchid. In the erect group, the flowers grow upward, and as the flower spike blooms and becomes heavier, it slowly curves over time.
The Nobile orchids typically grow in cooler climates or higher altitudes. These orchids thrive in the cooler mountain bases of Southeast Asia, especially in southern China. They can also be found in neighboring countries like Burma, Thailand, Nepal, parts of India, and Vietnam. While these regions can be quite hot, Dendrobiums can be found in mountainous areas where temperatures range from around 80 F (27 C) during the day to mid-sixties (66 F or 20C) at night. Although Dendrobiums can tolerate a few days of near-freezing temperatures, it’s not recommended as it risks damaging the plant. The humidity levels in these areas stay high, ranging from 60 to 80% (ideal for root rot, so extra care is needed).
Dendrobiums require a full winter’s rest from watering, and this can be seen as the leaves fall off. They are also classified as type I orchids. While the Nobile orchid is the most commonly known type of Dendrobium Orchids varieties, there are many other species that come in a wide range of colors and sizes, making them a favorite among orchid enthusiasts.
